Urban central kitchen

Abu Dhabi’s upcoming mixed-used development, Al Maryah Central, is introducing a surprising, fun new way to dine

Dining out is a way of life in the UAE, where restaurants number in the thousands for each emirate. And dining here is unique. Unlike many European cities, where it can be hard to find certain cuisines (ever tried to find good Mexican food in Paris? or an authentic Thai place in Belgrade?), the UAE is such a melting pot of expatriates that we’re lavishly spoiled when it comes to dining choices.

So, what could be added to this already vibrant food and beverage scene?

Al Maryah Central Kitchens has the answer: a focus on the home. Using a classic home layout as inspiration, American architect and interior designer David Rockwell has created a family-oriented, homey and warm space where guests can dine, lounge, catch up, network and chill — think of it as casual dining with a theatrical flair, all in an upscale food court environment.

Between The Galleria, with its two hotels and wonderful array of Dining Collection restaurants, and Al Maryah Central, visitors to Abu Dhabi will have an entire district full of choice, including waterfront dining, dining al fresco and casual dining.

Rockwell has a long list of design experience under his belt, including Nobu restaurants and hotels, Gordon Ramsay restaurants, Aloft and W hotels and plenty of theatres around the world.

Designed around a central atrium full of light and natural vegetation, Central Kitchens will comprise five dining districts to reflect a home eating experience: The Living Room, The Study, The Garden Kitchen, The Courtyard and The Patio. Each of these precincts will have its own décor, seating, cuisine type and more.

Once Al Maryah Central opens in late 2018, it will offer food in more than 40 different styles, in 26 venues. With 76 per cent of Abu Dhabi residents visiting a mall at least once per week, and 71 per cent of those visitors coming for the main purpose of eating and drinking, Central Kitchens is going to be the place to be seen in Abu Dhabi.

Between The Galleria, with its two hotels and wonderful array of Dining Collection restaurants, and Al Maryah Central, visitors to Abu Dhabi will have an entire district full of choice, including waterfront dining, dining al fresco and casual dining.

Because of its multipurpose ethos, Central Kitchens will have something for everyone, from workers to locals to tourists; whether you fancy grabbing a quick cup of coffee in between shopping at Al Maryah Central’s huge array of shops, or prefer to tuck into a five-course gastronomic menu.

The dining destination pivots on the idea of a culinary journey around the world, inspired by famous food and beverage outlets from cities as diverse as Amsterdam, Singapore, New York City, Munich and more — consolidated into one high-energy mash-up that is brought together by authentic Arabian interior design between each dining district.

One of the main themes of Central Kitchens is the interactivity between diners and food curators, so open display kitchens will be a prominent design feature. You’ll be able to watch fresh meats as they’re smoked, carved and served; and fresh pasta as it takes its journey from freshly made dough to your plate.

Ultimately, Central Kitchens will be as immersive and engaging a dining experience as cooking at home with friends and family. This fun, interesting dining-as-relaxed-theatre concept is a first for not Abu Dhabi, but for the entire region. We can’t wait!
