TOD'S DRIVE ON COLLECTION

The famous car shoe from Tod’s is the cornerstone of the dynamic men's brand.

When it comes to footwear icons, one shoe is guaranteed to have its place in the men’s pantheon: the Tod’s Gommino.

The beloved loafer gets a summer reboot this year with a series of new models and colours; there are even versions in orange and yellow fluro. Inspired by the 1950s driving shoe, the moccasin with its 133 rubber pebbles underfoot brings out new versions, combining wine and navy, biscuit and blue and a denim version, worn here by Chinese actor Tong Dawei.

Tod’s CEO Diego Della Valle says the Gommino is a summer suitcase staple. “When you travel, you take a pair of Gommino shoes in your luggage – it’s automatic,” he says. “It’s a unique and friendly product – I actually have about 100 pairs at home.”

Naturally, the Gommino was seen on the runway at the Tod’s menswear SS19 presentation, not only on the feet of models but also – in a deconstructed fashion – on large tote bags, which featured corners reinforced with the shoe’s trademark pebbles.

Preppy stripes on the Gommino, jackets and belts were a highlight of the collection that was titled ‘An Italian Attitude’. With the exit of creative director Andrea Incontri this summer, Tod’s faces an exciting future. Incontri said it had been “an honour to be part of this great family,” adding that Tod’s had been “a school and an important experience in my development.”

With new design talent set to take the wheel soon, Tod’s is driving on with its Gommino on the pedal.
