Cool chic

A plethora of cutting edge trends from metallics and winter prints to head-to-toe block colour sets the tone for the season ahead

Winter would not be winter without some sparkle, shimmer and sheen; from gliteratti boots at Balenciaga and Saint Laurent to chain mail, crystal mesh, sequins and high shine dresses, skirts, shirts and accessories that took the catwalk by storm at Alexander McQueen and Bottega Veneta. It was the revival of ramping up your evening attire and we loved it.

Spotted on the streets of New York, London, Milan and Paris, floral prints are everywhere. Antique floral prints inspired a whole host of designers this season. This translated into everything from casual tops to full-fledged princess gowns. Balenciaga, Dolce and Gabbana, and Tory Burch opted for pretty, vintage floral on coats, capes and dresses.

This transient trend may traditionally be associated with spring, but the feminine and delicate fabric stands the test of time by sticking through autumn with stamina, style and grace. There were classic lace dresses at Dolce & Gabbana and Dior; whilst turtleneck lace dresses were also worn under velvet layers and masculine trousers, and this created an edgier look to the timeless fabric.

This standout shade is officially the colour of the season. Red adds a vibrant touch to basic blacks. The hue came in a plethora of shades on the runway, from deep burgundy to crimson, raspberry to tomato. There were stunning, dazzling dresses at Alexander McQueen and Prada, while Fendi kept things chic with a streamlined coat.

Suiting was big last season, and when we say big, we mean heavy duty shoulders and ’80s silhouettes. But for AW17, there’s a more feminine feel with nip-and-tuck belts seen at Alexander McQueen and Prada. We loved the waist-cinching cuts at Lanvin and Dolce & Gabbana. Meanwhile, the androgynous looks on the catwalk at Bottega Veneta and Celine were relevant and classic.
