Jet set lifestyle

The world's great minds have realised that travel is essential to being a well-rounded individual. With Abu Dhabi airport flying to more than 100 destinations, it’s an ideal base from which to explore the world

Rosewood Sand Hill

Just 35 miles south of San Francisco, the Rosewood Sand Hill is one of the most beautiful Silicon Valley hotels with its 16 acres of northern California natural beauty and the Santa Cruz Mountains nearby and lovely fields of parkland where you can take a stroll, have a picnic and explore. The relaxed California Ranch decor, which is a bit Arts and Crafts movement and a bit Art Deco with a Latin American influence, is the perfect place to wake up to and enjoy the views. The hotel offers 121 rooms and suites and several two- and three-bedroom luxury villas available for long-term lease. The Michelin-starred Madera restaurant serves up traditional American cuisine, from surf and turf to a rotisserie oven for the poultry. And all the food served is sustainably harvested seafood, vegetables and grains and naturally raised meats.

Milaidhoo Maldives

While the Maldives is a popular destination for travellers from the UAE seeking a romantic hideaway or diving experience, choosing the right resort when you’ve never been can be hard. We can highly recommend Milaidhoo, which offers the best in Maldivan ‘barefoot hospitality’. This is a place where UAE residents can escape and simply relax. As the hotel brochure says, “we shun the current trend for high-gloss, name-dropping, look-at-me hotel glitz – this is a non-selfie stick retreat away from it all.” Amongst the UNESCO protected Baa Atoll, the resort offers a protected marine area where you can view dolphins, manta rays, whale sharks and more during a dive or a small-boat cruise. Each of the 50 over-water villas were designed by Maldivan architect Mohamed Shafeeq, and each villa opens up 180 degrees to put you right outside with nature (but still on a plush mattress and pillow).

Corinthia Hotel St. George’s Bay Malta

Malta is known for a couple of things: its close relation to Italy and the fact that its language is the only one to use the Roman alphabet that’s derived from Arabic. But did you know that Malta isn’t just one island? It’s actually an archipelago, comprising seven tiny islets (the geographical term for a small island). And while the modest Mediterranean country got its independence from Britain in 1964, they still, like the Brits, Aussies and the Japanese, drive on the left side of the road. St. George’s Bay, located on the north east coast of Malta, is a quaint little inlet mostly dominated by picturesque hotels. With a vast array of stunning options in Malta, it can be hard to choose which resort to stay in, but Corinthia Hotel stands out for a few reasons.

Firstly, the resort offers five pools, including one for children and one indoors, should the weather be anything less than balmy. The hotel itself, unlike many resorts, has its own water sports centre, which means you can book activities such as diving, snorkeling, sailing and more with the hotel rather than a third party. For a touch of luxury, book one of the resort’s 38 suites, each of which has its own balcony overlooking the stunning and picturesque St. Julian’s Bay.

For food, we recommend Caviar & Bull, the hotel’s Mediterraneanly delightful fine dining restaurant – the house-smoked fresh salmon with parmigiano foam, aromatic herbs, honey caviar, truffle and black seeds has to be tasted to be believed. One of the best things about Corinthia Hotels is that they’re Maltese-owned rather than part of a large foreign chain, so you can expect personal, traditional Maltese service. And if you’re a switched on social media user as most Gulf travellers are, the hotel’s approach to mixing technology with service will delight you. Its Twitter by the Pool service allows you to simply tweet the hotel with your umbrella number to order your food and drinks. And the newest tech offering is the hotel’s dedicated WhatsApp number, to which guests can send their requests and get help from anywhere on the island. So that means if you remember that you need more guava juice in your room while you’re out on a hike, you can simply ping the hotel and it will be waiting for you when you return, happy and thirsty from your excursion.
